APRIL 1ST IS THE DEADLINE FOR ANYONE WHO IS FILING HOMESTEAD FOR THE FIRST TIME OR WHO HAS HAD A CHANGE IN HOMESTEAD STATUS
It will not be necessary for anyone to come in and refile, unless there has been a change in homestead status for either spouse before January 1st of this year, for example;
NEW DEED ON HOMESTEAD PROPERTY
BECOME DISABLED (husband or wife)
AGE 65 OR OLDER
Must bring proof such as driver’s license or birth certificate
DEATH OF SPOUSE
PURCHASED NEW HOME
Copy of Deed
Social Security Number
Social Security Number of spouse if married
Tag numbers of all vehicles in your possession
Full price paid for the property
False statements, misrepresentations, concealment of material facts, failure to notify the tax assessor of any changes to the homestead property are considered to be violations.
The penalties imposed include the additional assessment of double the amount of taxes lost due to a fraudulent claim, a misdemeanor charge, a charge of perjury, a felony charge, a fine of up to $5,000.00, imprisonment of up to 2 years or a combination thereof.
